We Get It

Picking the Right Fireplace Can Be Confusing

You want something new, beautiful, and warm where there's something old, outdated, and cold. But fireplaces are confusing, it's hard to know what's even possible in your house, and it's easy to put the whole project off another year—while the winters here stay cold and wet.

We'll make sure you get the one you need. One free in-home visit settles what's actually possible, our own gasfitters and technicians handle everything from the permit to the first fire, and the next storm that takes the power out finds you warm.

A modern wood-burning fireplace has almost nothing in common with the open masonry box it replaces. It's a sealed, insulated firebox with controlled air, and it turns wood into heat instead of turning your living room into a chimney. Where an open fireplace loses ground on a cold night, one of these gains it.

More questions & answers

Is a wood fireplace worth it if I already have a masonry one?

If the masonry one is open and you never light it, yes. An open fireplace typically pulls more heated air up the flue than it delivers to the room. A modern sealed firebox reverses that. If the masonry is sound and you want to keep it, a wood insert does the same thing for less money.

How much wood am I going to burn?

Less than you'd expect, because a sealed firebox burns the smoke an open fire wastes. The honest variables are how cold you keep the house, how well it's insulated, and whether your wood is genuinely seasoned. Wet wood is the single most common reason a good stove disappoints someone.

Do I have to have the chimney swept?

Once a year, and we do that work ourselves. Our technicians are CSIA certified, and an annual sweep and inspection is what keeps a wood appliance safe and covered. We'll set the reminder when we install it.
